Guībǔ yǔ gǔbǔ·Pyromantic shell and bone divination
A pyromantic decision system using prepared turtle shell or animal bone whose cracks were interpreted; it is the earliest Chinese divinatory institution documented by a large surviving archive.

Burned bones occur at Neolithic sites. Late-Shang Anyang materials reveal an organized royal practice covering sacrifice, war, weather, harvest, illness and travel. Turtle divination remained in ritual texts after the Shang but no longer occupied the same political center.
